Advice & Guides · Renovation planning
You may be able to move your boiler, but the new position needs an installation survey before your renovation layout is finalised. Pipework, flue arrangements, access and any associated building work influence the plan and the quotation.
Moving a boiler can free up kitchen space or help a bathroom redesign. The useful question is not simply how far it will move. It is whether the proposed position can work with the appliance and the building, and what needs changing to achieve it.
Discuss the new position before ordering units
Give your heating installer the planned kitchen or bathroom layout before cabinets, tiles or finished flooring are ordered. Mark both the current and proposed boiler positions. Tell them which walls, doors and windows will change and when other trades will work.
Worcester Bosch recommends starting relocation with a home survey, including assessment of the existing setup, proposed position, pipework and flue requirements. A photograph helps start the discussion but cannot establish every site condition.
What affects a boiler relocation quote?
Ask your installer to itemise the work rather than quoting only a distance. Points to clarify include:
- The practical pipe routes between the boiler and existing services.
- Which sections will be accessible and which require floors or walls to be opened.
- The proposed flue arrangement and any access equipment.
- Electrical and controls alterations.
- Removal, refitting, testing and commissioning of the appliance.
- Making good at the old and new positions.
A position that appears close on a floor plan may involve a difficult route. A more distant position may offer easier access. The final scope needs to reflect your property rather than a universal price per metre.
Can the existing boiler be moved?
Ask for an assessment of the existing appliance before assuming it should be retained. Provide the model, approximate age, service history and details of any faults. Compare moving it with installing a replacement in the proposed position. The two quotations should state their different scope and cover arrangements.
If you are unsure whether replacement is justified, our repair or replacement guide explains which questions to ask. Do not replace a serviceable appliance simply because a renovation is happening; obtain the reasons for the recommendation.
What about a cupboard, garage or loft?
These are positions to discuss, not locations we can approve from a general guide. Ask the installer to check the appliance instructions and explain service access, practical use and any additional work for the proposed space. Do not design an enclosure around the boiler without confirming its requirements.
Think about everyday access as well as appearance. Will you be able to read the display and use permitted user controls? Will future servicing be straightforward? Give the installer those questions alongside your wish to free up room.
Agree disruption and making good
Ask how the move will affect heating and hot water, and agree the work sequence with your builder. Confirm who handles plastering, decoration, floor repairs, boxing-in and closing the former openings. If several trades are involved, identify who coordinates them. This avoids discovering an unfinished item after the boiler work is complete.
Prepare for your survey
- Send your postcode and boiler model.
- Provide photographs of its current position and the proposed area.
- Share plans and dates for the renovation.
- State whether you want to keep the boiler or compare replacement.
- Describe any current heating or hot-water problems.
Do not remove the casing, disconnect services or attempt to move the appliance yourself. This guide is for planning the job with an appropriately qualified installer.
